Candle company turns on the lights in Leesburg

LEESBURG -- The Swan Creek Candle Company makes it a business practice to purchase and restore historic buildings on Main street in northern cities. Today, the company is celebrating a first -- the ribbon-cutting for its first store in the South, on Main Street in downtown Leesburg.
"We go into Main Street communities in historical areas and we renovate old buildings," Socha Taylor, store manager, said Tuesday.
"There are certain things that we look for and Leesburg is doing it right," she added. "We love the historic downtown and the building was the right size; it's something we could clean up and restore."
The 707 W. Main St. building also offered the ideal ambiance, she said. She said company officials checked out several Florida towns for their first store in the South.
"It has to have a certain type of charm, a certain type of feel to it, and in general, this town has it," Taylor said. "Leesburg just hit all of the criteria."
The family-owned company began in 1978. Its 30,000 square foot factory and outlet store is in Swanton, Ohio. Outlet stores are in Dundee, Mich.; Vermilion, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; Perry, Mich.; Jackson, Mich.; and Rochester, Mich.
The company became a pioneer in candle making in 1996, when the decision was made to change candle production from paraffin (petroleum) to a renewable source -- soybeans.
"All of our candles are American soybean wax," Taylor said, while noting the wax burns cleaner, longer, and is lead free.
